International Students: Required Documents for Your Immigration Status
As an international student, you have obligations related to your immigration status. You must provide the necessary immigration documents to remain enrolled for the duration of your program.
Each term, Université de Montréal must ensure that international students' documents comply with the Ministère de l'Enseignement Supérieur’s verification rules, as well as those of immigration authorities. The Registrar's Office is responsible for conducting this verification.
In accordance with regulations, an incomplete file—whether due to failure to submit or providing expired immigration documents—prohibits an international student from being enrolled. Consequently, access to online courses (via the StudiUM platform) will be revoked, and the university will be required to withdraw the student's registration for the current term.
Cancelling a registration will result in the removal of tuition fees and the termination of medical coverage. However, some fees may still apply, notably those related to medical coverage for previous months. If tuition fees have already been paid, a credit will be applied to the student’s account. For more details, please consult the Centre étudiant (Student Center).

Renewing Your Immigration Documents
To study in Québec, you must be in good standing with both levels of government: Québec (CAQ) and Canada (Study Permit), for the entire term.
Your Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) and your Study Permit are issued for:
- a specific period, with an end date
- a level of study (cycle d'étude)
- a specific learning institution
Ensure your documents are always valid, and start the renewal process several months before they expire.
For assistance with your renewal process, please visit UdeM international and watch the following videos:
Important step following the renewal of the Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ)
Before your Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) expires, you must upload your updated attestation of issuance of your Quebec Acceptance Certificate to your Centre étudiant, valid for the entire term without any interruption. The document must indicate the name of the institution, Université de Montréal, and the level of study corresponding to your enrolled program.
Important step following the renewal of the study permit
Before your study permit expires, you must upload proof of renewal in your Centre étudiant:
- Either the renewed Study Permit, indicating the name of the institution: Université de Montréal
Please note that the second option is only temporary. You must upload the Study Permit to your Centre étudiant as soon as you receive it.
Impact of Your Situation on Your Tuition Fees
To qualify for an international fee exemption, an international student must hold a valid Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) and a Study Permit. However, to obtain all the immigration documents required by government authorities, the student must be present on Canadian territory.
For example, a French or Belgian francophone student who has not yet obtained a Study Permit and is taking online courses outside Canada will not be entitled to the international fee exemption. The student will therefore have to pay the international student tuition fees until their arrival in Canada.
