Study Permit

Students enrolled in a regular study program

You are a student enrolled in a regular study program (preparatory year, certificate, minor, major, bachelor's degree, graduate diploma (DESS), master's degree, doctorate...).

You must upload the following to your Centre étudiant (Student Centre):

Your study permit issued with the name of the institution, Université de Montréal, and valid for the entire term.

Students who have renewed their study permit before its expiry must upload proof of submission of their renewal application and their payment receipt (both documents merged into one PDF file).

Students enrolled in a study program for 6 months or less

You are a student enrolled in a study program for 6 months or less.

You must upload the following to your Centre étudiant (Student Centre):

Proof of your legal status in Canada. The document proving your legal status must be valid for the entire term and selected from one of these documents below :

  • Study permit including the name of the institution, Université de Montréal.
  • Visitor's record
  • Passport identification page with either the entry stamp page showing the arrival date in Canada or the electronic airline ticket and/or boarding pass.

Please note that by providing one of the above documents, you can only enroll in courses for one term. Following this term, to enroll in additional courses, you must request and obtain a CAQ and study permit.

Students enrolled in an exchange program for more than 6 months

You are a student enrolled in an exchange program for more than 6 months.

You must upload the following to your Centre étudiant (Student Centre) :

Your study permit issued with the name of the institution, Université de Montréal, and valid for the entire stay, or at least for the duration of the current term.

Students who have renewed their study permit before its expiry must upload proof of submission of their renewal application and their payment receipt (both documents merged into one PDF file).

Visiting Research Students admitted through the exchange program

You are a visiting research student admitted through the exchange program.

You must upload the following to your Centre étudiant (Student Centre) :

  • The letter of invitation from the professor.

In addition to one of these documents below :

  • Your visitor's record
  • Your work permit
  • Passport identification page along with the airline ticket or boarding pass (the stay must take place within 6 months of the arrival date stated on the airline ticket).

Refugee students

You are a refugee student enrolled in a regular study program (preparatory year, certificate, minor, major, bachelor's degree, graduate diploma (DESS), master's degree, doctorate...).

You must upload the following to your Centre étudiant (Student Centre) :

Your study permit issued with the name of the institution, Université de Montréal, and valid for the entire term.

Students who have renewed their study permit before its expiry must upload proof of submission of their renewal application and their payment receipt (both documents merged into one PDF file).

 

You are a refugee student enrolled in an independent study program.

You must upload one of the following documents to your Centre étudiant (Student Centre) :

  • Your Notice of Decision from the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB)
  • Your study permit including the name of the institution, Université de Montréal.
  • Your visitor record

Out-of-country enrolled students

 Complete the online form for students outside Canada and follow the instructions included in the form.

Students eligible for the IFAP program (for foreign workers)

 

If you qualify for the temporary public policy allowing foreign nationals with a valid work permit to study without a study permit, here are the documents you'll need to provide:

  • Copy of the valid work permit whose application was received by IRCC no later than June 7, 2023 (if the permit was issued after June 7, include the acknowledgement of submission of your application)

OR

  • Copy of expired work permit AND acknowledgement of extension application submitted by June 7, 2023, confirming that work authorization has been extended.
  • Copy of the e-mail received from IRCC in the online account, containing a unique customer identification number and confirming eligibility for this measure, if you have received one.

Upload these documents to your Centre étudiant as one file.

Please note: If the study program’s duration exceeds the period of validity for the work permit or the PIPT expiry date, an application for a Study Permit and CAQ for studies must be made for the period following expiration.


Please note that we recommend starting your application process at least 5 months before your documents expire.
